Samson Evans leads Eastern Michigan past Akron in two overtimes

Samson Evans’ three touchdowns helped lead Eastern Michigan to a 30-27 win over the University of Akron in an exciting double overtime game.

Akron, which is now 2-9 overall and 1-6 in Mid-American Conference play, has lost three games in overtime this season and five other one-point close games.

Evans scored on an 11-yard touchdown run up the middle in the first overtime. Akron opened the second overtime with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Tahj Bullock to Jake Newell, followed by a 36-yard field goal by Owen Wiley.

Austin Smith connected with Jere Getzinger on a 3-yard touchdown pass to seal the win for the Eagles.

Evans rushed for 71 yards in the game, including a pair of 2-yard scores in the second quarter, to help Eastern Michigan to a 5-6 overall record and a 3-4 conference record. Smith completed 20 of 32 passes and rushed for 214 yards. Jesus Gomez made a 32-yard field goal with 10 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 17 and send the game into overtime.

Lorenzo Lingard and Bullock each scored short touchdowns for Akron in the second quarter. Wiley’s 23-yard field goal with eight minutes left in the game gave the Zips a 17-14 lead. Jeff Undercuffler Jr.
