France pledges support at COP28 to accelerate the global energy transition

NEW DELHI: France’s top priority at the annual UN climate talks in Dubai is to support all commitments, especially financial ones, to accelerate the global energy transition, French Minister of State for Development Chrysoula Zacharopoulou said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the sixth General Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), Zacharopoulou said climate catastrophes are multiplying and countries must “step up their efforts on all fronts” to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement.

“At the COP, one of France’s priorities is to support all commitments, especially financial ones, to accelerate the global energy transition,” she said.

ISA was launched by India and France at the 2015 UN Climate Conference in Paris. The intergovernmental organization is committed to addressing the energy needs and challenges of its member countries and promoting solar energy through several flagship interventions.

Zacaropoulou said the solar revolution is underway and will accelerate dramatically in the coming years. Citing data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), she said solar power will exceed 1,000 gigawatts by 2050.

“The challenge for our organization, therefore, is no longer to support the growth of solar energy. This boom is inevitable and has already begun. Today, our task is to channel this momentum.
